Consumer markets throughout Europe vary enormously in their use and acceptance of credit, debit, and pre-paid cards. Visa Europe recognised that there was much to be achieved by sharing innovation between its member banks, across sophisticated countries such as the UK and less well-developed areas such as Turkey and Eastern Europe. The traffic would by no means be one-way: some of the whacky ideas dreamt up in the far corners of Europe – especially for youth markets – might have strong appeal for more conservatively-minded western countries.

Working with CCI, a programme was developed to identify and relay best practice in the development and launch of new card programmes (the audience being card issuers rather than the public). Careful segmentation and version control ensured that potentially commercially sensitive information was not shared with member banks competing in the same geographical markets. Member banks grew their businesses; Visa grew market share.
